As a Traffic Operator, you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.



This hourly/wage position is based in Culpeper, located in Virginia's Piedmont region, stretching from the Blue Ridge Mountains east towards Richmond. Culpeper District is responsible for 10,465 lane-miles of state-maintained roads, 1,700 bridges, and large culverts in the counties of Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock.

Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:
*Installing and maintaining pavement markings, pavement messages, highway signs and other traffic control devices.
*Performing manual labor in erecting signs and installing pavement messaging.
*Operating equipment used in signs, pavement messaging, including hand tools
*Conducting preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
*Working during emergencies, including incident management, snow removal, and hurricane preparedness.

Performance of duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.



Minimum Qualifications

*Skill in operation and maintenance of specialty equipment and complex machinery used in pavement marking and messaging.
*Experience performing heavy manual labor.
*Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret work plans and specifications, and complete accurate work documentation.
*Skill in using and maintaining hand and power tools, and equipment used in highway maintenance and repair.
*Basic familiarization with traffic control devices and work zone standards.
*Valid Driver's License



Additional Considerations

*Experience in pavement marking and messaging operations.
*Experience in the installation and maintenance of various types of traffic control devices.
*Experience in emergency operations to include snow and ice removal, storms, and debris clean-up.

The position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Fingerprint-based background checks, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified before employment.

Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM.

Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.



This is an hourly/wage (part-time) position, averaging around 29 hours per week, and can work up to 1,500 maximum hours between May 1 and April 30 each year and is not eligible for state benefits.
