Job Duties

Are you looking for an opportunity to implement processes and procedures to keep the state of Virginia safe?. We are searching for individuals driven by safety to support state traffic operations.



VDOT's Richmond District is seeking a qualified supervisor to perform oversight of traffic signal maintenance and intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and supervise others doing the same work activity, ensuring compliance with established safety standards, VDOT policies and procedures, and equipment operational standards.

Incumbent in position will collaborate with technical and engineering staff to facilitate operation and maintenance of the district’s transportation network.

Oversee consultants and contractors providing systems support and services. Ensure team members are trained and proficient in new traffic management technologies and equipment in traffic management systems.

Ensure compliance with established safety standards, VDOT policies and procedures, and equipment operational standards. To supervise others doing the same work activity.

To ensure contracted and in-house maintenance and construction work is performed in accordance with plans and specifications, safety standards, VDOT policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to physically perform hands-on inspection of signals, components, used required equipment, work at heights, in confined spaces, in proximity of moving traffic and inclement weather.
• Knowledge of a variety of traffic control devices, as well as traffic signal maintenance and operations.
• Valid Driver’s license
• Ability to effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to plan, coordinate and prioritize multiple assignments and competing priorities.
• Ability to supervise and manage operations and staff by analyzing needs and problems, identifying solutions and implementing recommendations to support organizational goals.
• Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
• Knowledge of federal and state regulations and standards related to traffic control devices.
• Ability to serve in an on-call capacity and respond to emergencies within a specified period.
• Knowledge of traffic management systems, including timing plans, graphic design, computer use, and databases.



Additional Considerations

• Progressively responsible experience in signal maintenance.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Electronics or related field desired.
• IMSA Traffic Signal Level I or II technician certification
• Substantial electrical or signal experience
• Commercial Driver’s License
• Experience in the electronic field to include electronic board and component level repairs, working experience in a 24-7-hour operation facility.
