Duties

Functions as the institution authority on state of the art security equipment such as locks, locking devices and systems, closed circuit television systems, electric gates, and blue print and schematic analyzing.


Ensures the physical security of the facility as it relates to structural requirements, operations and total familiarization of the life safety codes for the institution environment.

Maintains the armory where weapons and ammunition are stored, handled, and prepared for transportation as needed.


Analyzes mechanical, electrical, locking systems, engineering blue prints, weapon repair and schematics.

Troubleshoots locks and locking devices, and makes necessary repairs using a variety of hand and power tools as they relate to carpentry, electricity, and masonry.


Reads, creates and analyzes manufacturers’ key codes and cuts keys for institutional use only.

Sets up and monitors internal security programs to include instructions and procedures for office closing procedures and locking and unlocking procedures for safes, doors, and vaults.


Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and is performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualifications requirements.


Education

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.


Experience:

One year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:


  • Experience that includes knowledge in training institution staff in all areas of security in order to maintain a high level of sound operational and structural security at the institution.
  • Experience in reading and comprehending technical publications, drawings, engineering blue prints, and schematics of buildings.
  • Experience that include technical knowledge of prison locks and locking systems, including their application and use within a correctional setting.
  • Experience in analyzing and accessing the current condition of equipment and feasibility towards repair or replacement.
  • Experience in handling and maintaining a high level of technical and operational expertise in use of all emergency entry equipment, riot control equipment, chemical munitions, stun munitions and all special operations response team equipment.

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview, urinalysis, physical, and background investigation.

All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.

The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score of 68 must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.



Successful completion of the “Introduction to Correctional Techniques”, three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
