The Position

This role, based in South San Francisco (SSF), is a key part of Genentech’s Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) function within the Security, Safety, Health, and Environment (SSHE) department. The Senior Sustainability Program Manager, Circularity is crucial to maintaining Genentech’s operational integrity and promoting a culture of proactive prevention and innovative problem-solving. Our mission is to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of our people, the environment, sustainability, and our pipeline across the SSF campus and our extensive network. Reporting to the Senior Director Sustainability, the Senior Sustainability Program Manager, Circularity will be responsible for designing and implementing innovative strategies to embed circular economy principles across the organization’s operations, products, and supply chains. This may include but not be limited to plastics recycling, lab and office materials reuse (e.g. chemicals, packaging, hardware, etc.), recycled water solutions, construction materials use, and equipment donations to the community.



This role will involve leading circularity projects from conception to completion, including cross-functional teams and vendors, and ensuring alignment with business objectives and sustainability goals. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in sustainability, project management including business case development, and a passion for driving systemic change towards a circular economy.

Key Responsibilities


Internal Leadership and Representation

  • Internal and External Representation: Act as the face of the EHS function both within Genentech and externally. Leverage specialized expertise to represent the company at industry forums, regulatory meetings, and other external engagements.
  • Strategic Leadership: Lead EHS initiatives with medium to high regulatory requirements, risks, and complexity. Provide strategic guidance and mentorship to EHS staff, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Expertise and Influence: Demonstrate strong understanding of programmatic principles, offering deep, actionable insights into program operations and strategy. Lead by example, setting high standards for EHS performance.

Program Management


  • Comprehensive Program Oversight: Manage all aspects of assigned medium risk EHS programs, ensuring alignment with SSHE outcomes and long-term strategic goals. Adapt programs to meet regulatory requirements and industry standards without compromising business outcomes. Proficient in conducting risk assessments and implementing control measures.
  • Moderate-Risk Program Management: Effectively manage EHS programs with moderate risk and complexity, implementing appropriate risk mitigation strategies to safeguard operations and personnel.
  • Vendor and Regulatory Management: May oversee medium dollar/spend vendor relationships through effective negotiations, contracts, and invoicing. Identify and interpret legal requirements, translating them into practical compliance tasks. Manage all phases of the permitting process for assigned programs.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Maintain moderate cross-functional dependency and collaboration with other programs or services, driving integrated and holistic EHS solutions.

Customer Engagement

  • Key Customers: Partner closely with a broad spectrum of internal customers, including but not limited to, Research & Development (gRED), Site Operations, Workforce Services, Real Estate & Workplace Effectiveness, and Design & Construction
  • Tailored Solutions: Customize EHS programs to meet specific business needs, achieving compliance through strategic engagement with Business Partners (BPs) and the SSHE Leadership Team (LT).
  • Proactive Engagement: Actively engage with customers in their workspaces to gain insights into their processes and business operations. Serve as the primary EHS contact for key stakeholders on initiatives and projects related to EHS programs.

EHS Training and Compliance


  • Targeted Training: Right-size program training for diverse audiences to ensure effective content absorption and retention.
  • Incident Management: Provide technical expertise for incidents within managed programs, ensuring timely reporting and regulatory compliance.

Metric Development and Management

  • Meaningful Metrics: Develop and track program metrics to measure effectiveness, customer adoption, business interruption, cost, and risk. Collaborate with EHS and the SSHE LT to create sustainable improvement plans.

Output Planning and Implementation


  • Strategic Participation: Actively contribute ideas and participate in SSHE outputs, ensuring that program impacts are considered. Lead the implementation of outputs, driving successful adherence to SSHE standards.

Goal Setting and Adherence

  • Program Goals: Set and track program goals in alignment with business unit needs, budget, regulations, and SSHE/SS/Roche outcomes.
  • Individual Goals: Ensure individual goals drive improvements in safety, health, and environmental standards, include Roche competencies, and are aligned with SSHE and customer outcomes.

Emergency Response and Business Continuity


  • Emergency Response: Represent EHS and lead portions of the response in person or remotely during disaster, emergency response and recovery efforts, and business continuity events when needed.
  • Crisis Management: Experience in managing EHS incidents.
  • Business Continuity: The Senior EHS Program Manager may also be tasked with supporting business needs across EHS and SSHE, helping manage risks, and acting as a steward for additional programs as assigned.


Requirements

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related field with 8-10 years of experience, or no degree with 12 years of experience.
  • Degree Preferred: MS, MBA, PhD or similar degree
  • Regulatory Expertise: Strong understanding of regulatory requirements for circularity, particularly in CA, US and EU
  • Circularity Standards: Demonstrated knowledge of existing and emerging global circularity standards and frameworks, e.g. ISO, LCA, C2C, CEAP, CSRD, WBCSD, SDGs, UNEP, etc.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, capable of engaging with stakeholders at all levels.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $115,00.00 – $213,600.00 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
