Responsibilities*


In partnership with the Chief Perfusionist, ensures coverage of all clinical perfusion services daily to either the University Hospital (UH)/Cardiovascular Center (CVC) or Children’s and Women’s Hospital (CW). Provide leadership and direction to the Perfusionist team. Leads projects related to identified departmental metrics and participating in research programs. To assess, plan and implement the requirements needed for patient care treatment for cardiopulmonary bypass, mechanical circulatory support, hypothermic perfusion, respiratory assist or regional perfusion for adult and/or pediatrics cases. Adjust, monitor and troubleshoot equipment function to ensure patient safety. This position will spend approximately 20% of time performing and supporting administrative responsibilities and 80% of time will be spent performing Perfusionist work.

Directly Supporting Chief Perfusionist


  • Support the Chief Perfusionist in the coordination of the work of the Perfusionist team including scheduling and cross coverage issues between the distinct areas.
  • Plan, review, and assist with the administrative and operational activities of the Perfusion team including policy development and implementation, quality assurance projects, safety reporting and maintenance of equipment.
  • Provide input to Chief Perfusionist regarding employee evaluations and bring matters of concern to the Chief Perfusionist for resolution.

Perfusion Supervision and Development

  • Leads Perfusionists with collaboration of the Chief Perfusionist in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of patient care.
  • Assist in the recruiting, interview, selection, and orientation process of new hires.
  • Provide oversight for subclinical roles of staff Perfusionists, including VAD educator, Simulation Director, EMR administrator, Clinical Coordinator, Quality and Safety, Supply and Equipment maintenance, Protocol development.
  • Promotes, facilitates, and educates Perfusionists on new practice changes, regulatory requirements, and organizational practice changes.
  • Provide mentorship to students.

Application of Cardiovascular Perfusion Expertise


  • Operate heart-lung machine to achieve total bypass, coronary perfusion, circulatory assist, partial bypass, hypothermic perfusion, respiratory assist or regional perfusion in adult and/or pediatric cases.
  • Perform procedures utilizing the intra-aortic balloon pump, cell saver, ventricular assist devices and other equipment in adult and/or pediatric cases.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Chief Perfusionist, Associate Chief Nursing Officer, Anesthesia Faculty and Cardiac Surgery Faculty.
  • Confer with surgeons to become acquainted with the nature of surgery and gather information to be used during set-up and for the extracorporeal procedures.
  • Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas.


Patient Care

  • Adjust, monitor, and troubleshoot equipment to ensure patient safety.
  • Identify the needs of the patient regarding types of equipment, priming solution, and methodology in consultation with the surgeon and anesthesiologist.

Required Qualifications*


  • Bachelor’s degree in health science field and graduate of an accredited Perfusion program
  • Eight years post training Perfusionist experience
  • At least one year of experience serving as a Mentor for a student
  • Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) as recognized by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP)
  • Reasonable knowledge of anatomy, pathology, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, hematology, cardiology and surgery
  • Experience in cardiopulmonary bypass equipment maintenance
  • Strong commitment to contributing to a positive department culture
  • Apply sound problem-solving methods associated with the equipment, surgery or patient’s condition
  • On-Call commitment with a 30-minute response rate

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in Perfusion
  • Familiarity with the use of Centrifugal Pumps, Ventricular Assist Devices, and ECMO
  • Previous Perfusionist experience in a complex Academic Medical Center
  • Knowledge of Adult and Pediatric clinical perfusion; experience or interest in pediatrics
  • Knowledge of perfusion practices and equipment. Knowledge of surgical procedures and terminology
  • Strong interpersonal/human relations skills
  • Ability to work under stressful situations
  • This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in complex situations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to be able to work unpredictable hours, rotating shifts and on-call schedule


Work Schedule

Full Time, 40hrs, with on-call

Background Screening
