Located on scenic Possum Kingdom Lake in Graford, Texas, Camp Grady Spruce is a co-ed overnight camp providing 7 to 16-year-old campers with opportunities to partake in captivating outdoor and aquatic experiences while learning about the natural landscape.
Job Description
Camp Grady Spruce YMCA, located on beautiful Possum Kingdom Lake approximately 120 miles west of Dallas, is searching for an Equestrian Director. This role will live on site, coordinating corral, mini ranch, and horse operations. This person will be responsible for teaching horseback curriculum and lead riding activities for all programs throughout the year. Will also be responsible for the upkeep of the entire horse area, horse trails, and the mini farm.
The Equestrian Director has the following responsibilities:
Coordinates daily horseback staff efforts and schedules for trail rides, horseback instruction and other advanced equestrian programs.
Leads staff in cleaning and maintaining tack and other supplies and ensures that staff are using equipment and chemicals properly.
Ensure that all corral, mini ranch, and pasture areas remain clean, trimmed/mowed, and organized; inspecting areas periodically.
Utilizes current system to classify horses and to track number of horseback rides and horses used.
Ensures that equine supplies such as feed, hay, water, tack, and first aid supplies are adequately ordered and maintained.
Utilize current systems to ensure horses are fed daily, receive necessary medications, and are health-checked daily.
Assist in training and supervision of corral staff.
Reports maintenance problems.
Maintains inventory of horse supplies.
Ensure that Horse operations meet the expectations of the YMCA, ACA, Health Department and other governing entities.
Ensure horses are trained and ready for trail rides and lessons.
Qualifications
Must have experience in giving instructions to participants and in leading trail rides for various age groups.
Knowledge and experience in horse care (feeding, grooming, first aid, routine health care, etc.) is required.
Knowledge and experience in tack, tack maintenance, tack care.
Knowledge and experience in pasture management; including fencing, rotation schedules, etc.
Sufficient physical strength and ability to carry out essential duties in all types of weather.
Knowledge and experience in horse donations, purchases, and sales is a plus.
Must be able to work as a member of a team or serve as servant leader, including times when supervisors are not present.
Experience and knowledge of budgeting is preferred.
Prior experience in hiring horseback staff is a plus.
