Hi! We are Wildlabs, a design and technology studio based in Auckland, New Zealand. We are a team of 8, some of us are based in Auckland, some are remote.

We are looking for a passionate web developer (focusing on WordPress) with at least 3 years of commercial experience, ideally in a web agency/studio environment.

This role is more specific to WordPress development, as a significant number of our projects are WordPress.

We do not work with off-the-shelf site builders (Elementor etc), we build custom themes based on ACF / https://roots.io/ (composer-based) approaches.

There is an opportunity to also work on other PHP-based projects we have (Laravel/Statamic based typically).

The ideal candidate will:

  • be experienced in CLEAN and high-quality WordPress development (not throwing together 50 plugins)

  • be experienced with WooCommerce and its plugins
  • understand more complex systems based on WP with various integrations

  • be OK with occasional requirement of taking over WP projects from other agencies, where things can be more chaotic than we aim to do, cleaning them up etc (this is rare, and not our priority, but occasionally happens)

  • ideally have an eye for design and details like spacing, typography, and overall appreciation of good visual design

  • have experience with Vue or React, based on solid knowledge of vanilla JS

  • have good base knowledge of semantic HTML, accessibility best practices

  • know performance pitfalls and cross-browser/cross-device best practices

  • know modern CSS and pre-processors, BEM methodology

  • have knowledge of SEO technical best practices (Open Graph, JSONLD etc)

  • strive to improve, learn and write clean and reusable code

  • overlap with our NZT +12 timezone for at least 2-3 normal office hours every working day

Bonus points (not a requirement for this role, but nice to have):

  • have a good feeling of timings / animations and subtle micro-interactions

  • PHP in advanced capacity

  • experience with Laravel and/or Statamic

  • animation platforms (gsap or similar)

  • basic DevOps skills (AWS services)

If you don’t have all the above, but have most of them and are ready to learn, feel free to apply!

From our end:

  • interesting, creative, and challenging projects

  • technical project managers

  • new tech, ability to experiment with things

Overseas candidates will be considered full-time contractors by New Zealand law.

Please only apply if you are able to provide examples of your work, and describe what exactly you were working on.

IMPORTANT:  We are aiming to reply to all applicants, but due to the large number of applications, we might only reply to the most suitable candidates for the role. Please do not be offended if you do not hear from us. No recruiters, HR agencies, or “developer resellers” please.
