Department Summary
Genentech, a pioneering biotechnology company, is seeking an exceptional machine learning intern to join the Biology Research | AI Development (BRAID) department. Our lab advances state-of-the-art machine learning to drive innovation in drug discovery, with a focus on foundational models, large language models (LLMs), and explainable AI. Key research areas include Agentic AI, multi-modal learning, instructional tuning, and knowledge retrieval. This role offers the opportunity to develop cutting-edge ML methods with real-world impact in biomedical research.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.
The Opportunity
Join us to drive innovation in drug discovery by using cutting-edge technologies. You will:
- Utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) and single-cell foundation models to refine our drug discovery pipeline.
- Analyze and assess model performance for effective outcomes.
- Develop strategies to mitigate biases, ensuring accuracy across diverse datasets.
Program Highlights
- Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
- Program start dates are in June (Summer)
- A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
- Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
- Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
Who You Are
- Enrolled in a PhD program where your core focus is on machine learning, artificial intelligence, computational theory, or a related field.
Required Skills:
- Proficiency in deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.
- Expertise in LLMs and foundation models.
- Proven publication record in ML conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR).
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
- Familiarity with AI agents, fine-tuning methods (e.g., SFT, RLHF, RL with experimental feedback), prompt engineering, and LLM calibration techniques.
- Basic understanding of cellular and molecular biology.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $50 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
