2025 Summer Intern – Cell and Tissue Genomics
The Opportunity
Ana Meireles and Katie Geiger-Schuller at Genentech Research and Early Development (Cellular and Tissue Genomics Department) are looking for an exceptional intern to lead cutting edge technology development of high-throughput genomics screening (dataset generation).
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on site.
Responsibilities
- Conduct semi-independent research under joint mentorship.
- Develop scalable genomics or multimodal screening technologies useful for foundation modeling
- Collaborate with colleagues in Genentech Computational Sciences (gCS) on the design and analysis of perturbation studies
- Contribute data that will ultimately result in publication of a high-quality paper reporting on technical and biological advances resulting from this work.
Program Highlights
- Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
- Program start dates are in May
- A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are
Required Education
You meet one of the following criteria:
- Must be pursuing or have attained an Associate’s Degree OR
- Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree OR
- Must have attained a Bachelor’s degree (recent graduates not currently enrolled in a grad program) OR
- Must be pursuing a PhD
Required Majors
Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Bio-engineering, Biochemistry or related fields.
Required Skills
- Basic tissue culture experience, Tissue culture, molecular biology.
- Generation of genomics libraries (scRNA, RNAseq, ATAC-seq, etc) or demonstration of molecular biology proficiency in PCR and/or molecular cloning techniques.
- Expertise implementing ML methods using appropriate technologies (e.g, pytorch, JAX)
- Ability to effectively communicate about complex problems to peers.
- Independent, highly motivated, and highly collaborative with the interest to engage together with multi-disciplinary teams of computational scientists and biologists.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
- 2025 GEM Fellow candidates are highly preferred.
- Experience with or an interest to learn imaging/ immunofluorescence and/or laboratory automation are encouraged
- You are enthusiastic about working in a scientific environment, especially one that is related to drug discovery and development.
- You are a quick learner, are curious about new areas and the opportunity to build expertise, and courageously and creatively take initiative to see your ideas implemented.
- You are able to perform at a high level in a fast changing and demanding environment.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $23.00-$45.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
