The Position

2025 Summer Intern – Infectious Diseases and Host – Microbe Interactions

Department Summary


The Department of Infectious Diseases at Genentech is seeking a summer intern to participate in discovery research and drug development in the area of host-microbe interactions. The candidate will help drive our efforts to elucidate the mechanisms by which outer membrane vesicles modulate pathogenesis and interact with the host.

This internship position is located inSouth San Francisco, on-site.



The Opportunity

  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments to elucidate microbe-host interactions.
  • Learn and optimize new techniques to assay microbial virulence factors.
  • Work closely with a diverse scientific team that includes microbiologists, immunologists, cell biologists, and bioinformaticians.

Program Highlights


  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education:You meet one of the following criteria:


– Must be pursuing a Bachelors or Master’s Degree and completed 2 years of laboratory-based research experience or

– Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student), currently in year 2 or later


Required majors: Major in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field.

Required skills:


  • Strong background in microbiology and cell biology.
  • Extensive bacterial and cell culture experience.
  • The desire and ability to take on challenging projects and excitement for learning new experimental techniques.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.
  • Background in host-microbe interactions and experience with flow cytometry is a plus.
  • Proficiency in molecular manipulation of bacteria and mammalian cells.
  • Previous experience working with outer membrane vesicles would be advantageous.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.


The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $30-$45 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
