2025 Summer Intern – Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutics
Department Summary
The Department of Synthetic Molecule Pharmaceutics (SMP) is seeking a talented and motivated summer intern to join our efforts in researching tablet drug products. Our goal is to identify and understand new insights into developing compositions for pharmaceutical tablets. In this role, the candidate will utilize mechanical property characterization techniques to assess the relationship between tablet composition and process attributes that enhance the mechanical properties of tablets.
This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in fundamental drug product research while gaining firsthand experience in a world-class pharmaceutics organization. SMP employs state-of-the-art science and technology to develop and deliver high-quality dosage forms for the Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) product portfolio.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, California (on-site).
The Opportunity
- Prepare blends comprising common pharmaceutical tablet ingredients.
- Measure the bulk mechanical properties of these powder blends.
- Compress materials using state-of-the-art compaction simulators to replicate pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing processes.
- Evaluate the impact of ingredients on the mechanical and physical properties of powder blends.
- Contribute to publication(s) resulting from your summer work, if possible.
Program Highlights
- Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
- Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
- A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
- Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are
Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:
- Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree (enrolled student).
- Must have attained a Bachelor’s Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).
Required Majors: Mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Required Skills:
- Familiarity with basic engineering concepts.
- At least 2 years of laboratory research experience (including coursework).
- Demonstrated interest in pharmaceutical research and development.
- Willingness to learn, collaborate, and assist others.

- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $XX-$XX hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
