Duties

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining domestic heating equipment systems under supervision.
  • Performing complete overhauls of simple equipment by dismantling major components, repairing or replacing boilers, steam heating equipment, traps, pumps, generators, intercoolers, heat exchanges, oil burners, fire boxes, re-insulation, etc.
  • Working on low-pressure home heating systems employing electronic monitoring, sequencing and modulating controls.
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance and adjusting equipment controls such as temperature sensors, thermostats, and leak detectors.
  • Examining and operationally testing electric, electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems and equipment using specialized test equipment.
  • Replacing defective burners, switches, fuel lines, cutoff assemblies, and examining and adjusting thermostats, repairing or replacing equipment, maintaining electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical controls, identifying electronic control problems and making repairs to refractory liners in heating boilers.
  • Installing and troubleshooting small domestic and commercial air conditioning systems.
  • Testing units or systems upon completion of the repair to ensure that the air is conditioned, or equipment is repaired according to requirement.
