A total of three (3), 1.0 FTE Advanced Practice Professionals (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.

Responsibilities*

  • Inpatient rounds and table rounds
  • Writing orders
  • Daily progress notes
  • Processing discharges
  • Review of studies/lab results
  • Overseeing and coordinating discharge planning needs
  • Performing ER and inpatient consultations
  • Book operating room cases
  • Update families about care plans, explain diagnoses/surgical care
  • Communicate with nursing staff (pages, phone calls, MiChart chats)
  • Communicate changes in patient status with fellows/attendings
  • Discuss incoming patients with outpatient providers (pre-admits, pre-op plans)
  • Help to coordinate post-operative care. The Advanced Practice Professionals on this service will assist the staff surgeon and clinic nurses with pre-operative consultations, preparing and recording patient histories, performing physical examinations, explaining procedures to patients and families, and directing outpatient care via phone calls.
  • Accept transfers from the ICU
  • New admissions from the ED
  • Assist consult resident with new and established consults and communicating with primary teams
  • Obtain any urgent consents for OR
  • Perform various procedures as assigned by the supervising physician (e.g. circumcisions, gastrostomy tube replacement and management, Broviac catheter repair and removal, chest tube removal, incision and drainage of wounds, suction rectal biopsy).
  • The Advanced Practice Professional will participate in patient care conferences and peer quality review with attending and other staff members to assure quality patient care.
  • Function as part of a multidisciplinary team with physicians, RNs, a pharmacist, dieticians, fellows, residents and administrative support staff.

Required Qualifications*



NP

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Current specialty certification as an Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Acute Care, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Primary Care (with 2 years of Pediatric Surgery RN/NP experience), Family Nurse Practitioner (with 2 years of Pediatric Surgery RN/NP experience)
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS


PA

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS

NOTE: *employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

Desired Qualifications*

  • 1 year APP experience desired, experience in surgical specialty preferred, experience in pediatric specialty preferred
  • Acute Care PNP certification or enrollment and completion of Pediatric AC PNP program within 3 years of hire
  • Clinical experience in a surgical specialty and/or pediatric specialty preferred
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge and analytical abilities necessary to formulate medical/surgical interventions.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills noted on evaluations/refererences


Work Schedule

Schedule: team will rotate days/nights/weekends/holidays

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
