Under the direction of an experienced Registered Nurse, monitors patients and operates the apheresis machine as directed.
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed.
* Performs apheresis treatments for patients in the Sickle Cell Clinic under the direct supervision of an experienced Infusion and/or Apheresis Registered Nurse.
* Performs pre- and post-treatment apheresis machine set-up and break-down as per the manufacturer’s recommended procedure.
* Recognizes machine malfunctions and makes corrections under the guidance of the Registered Nurse.
* Measures and records patients’ pre- and post-apheresis vital signs as per procedure. Also, records the patient’s blood pressure on a routine basis during treatment and as needed.
* Starts and concludes apheresis treatments using the patient’s fistula, graft, and/or catheter site.
* Reports broken and unsafe equipment to the Infusion Services Clinical Program Coordinator and/or Department Manager.
* Reports and records pertinent patient data, such as observed changes in the patient’s condition and response to care.
* Detects and reports problematic signs and symptoms occurring before, during, and after apheresis
* Assists with obtaining basic patient information as part of the nursing history or ongoing assessment and reports abnormal values to the appropriate nurse.
* Observes and reports apparent physical and emotional patient changes to the assigned nurse.
* Monitors patients for special risks and reports observations to assigned nurse (i.e., falls, skin breakdown).
* Performs and completes all assigned skills and duties as outlined care plans, critical pathways, competencies, skills lists, standards, policies, and procedures.
* Practices infection control procedures and observes Standard Precautions (including appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment).
* Perform all other duties as assigned.
Located in Largo in the heart of Prince George’s County, our new state-of-the-art regional medical center (UM Capital Region Medical Center) will provide improved access to primary and ambulatory care services, and serve as a tertiary care center for critically ill patients. In addition, our new space will allow us to expand our offerings as a community partner to help improve the health status of Prince George’s County residents.
* High School diploma or equivalent
* National of Maryland state Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT); Certified Nursing Assistant – Dialysis Technician (CNA-DT); or CNA / EMT with training
* Basic Life Support – Health Care Providers (BLS-HCP)
* One (1) year of experience as a certified dialysis technician
