GENERAL SUMMARY
The Assistant Lab Manager – Microbiology reports to the Pathology, Microbiology, and Lab Safety Manager. The primary job function is to provide the clinical and technical skills necessary to develop, implement, monitor, and coordinate the day-to-day operation of the Microbiology Laboratory. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
• Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution required.
Licensure:
• MLT, MT, or MLS licensure by ASCP required
Experience:
• Approximately two years progressively more responsible related work experience necessary in order to gain full understanding of all policies, procedures, systems, and equipment used within assigned laboratory section, as well as advanced technical and professional proficiency in microbiology.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

1. Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Microbiology Laboratory.
2. Serves as a resource person for the Microbiology Laboratory, the Infection Prevention Leadership, Sepsis Leadership Team, the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and the Antibiotic Stewardship Committee. Ensures that established policies and procedures are followed.
3. Reviews abnormal and atypical test results.
4. Ensures that instrument calibration, maintenance, and correlations are performed; performs these functions as needed. Maintains documentation of maintenance and service records.
5. Ensures that quality control is performed and evaluated for shifts and trends. Creates action plans when quality control is out of range.
6. Develops proficiency testing schedule for the Microbiology Lab. Reviews proficiency survey testing program results and follows up on any proficiency testing failures.
7. Develops new tests and methodologies to meet the need of the medical staff and evaluates instrumentation. Obtains approval of the Laboratory Medical Director. Ensures testing for the implementation of new methods and procedures is performed and reviews associated documentation.
8. Writes, reviews, and updates policy and procedure manuals to comply with CAP and CLIA-88 and TJC standards. Prepares section to meet inspection requirements.
9. Keeps current with regulations affecting the Microbiology Laboratory.
10. Coordinates and participates as needed in the orientation and training of staff and students. Completes staff competency checklists and student evaluations. Performs staff competency testing.
11. Develops and maintains the Microbiology module of the laboratory information system and other programs to make microbiology data accessible to physicians, infection control personnel, clinical staff, and clients.
12. Provides information and documentation to the Manager of the Microbiology Lab regarding performance, problem solving, and decision making.
13. Monitors quality indicators to ensure optimal quality and performance of the Microbiology Laboratory.
14. Provides information regarding resource and instrumentation needs within area of responsibility. Provides information to aid budget variance analysis.
15. Maintains appropriate levels of inventory. Orders reagents and supplies to ensure continuous service.
16. Takes call/charge for employee and medical staff needs.
17. Maintains a cooperative working relationship with the medical staff and other hospital personnel to coordinate laboratory services.
18. Performs the duties of a Microbiology MLT or MT (per licensure) when needed.
19. Develops an antibiogram for SOMC based on analysis of patient results and organism sensitivity.
20. Designs and evaluates quality control for each test in the Microbiology lab and develops individualized quality control plans (ICQP) as needed.
21. Participates on peer interview team for Microbiology Tech candidates.
22. Coordinates staffing levels and schedules with the Microbiology/Pathology/Safety Manager.
23. Oversees and develops the education needs of the Microbiology staff. Develops and presents lectures at Grand Rounds to medical student and to area providers
24. Develops, maintains, and schedules customized computer reports to make Microbiology data available to providers, Pharmacy staff, Infection Prevention, clinical staff and outreach clients.
25. Ensures all other computer systems interface appropriately with Microbiology module of the laboratory information system.
26. Develops Dashboard indicators and provides data. Creates action plans to ensure optimal quality and performance of the Microbiology Laboratory.
27. Monitors daily productivity of staff.
28. Provides input for staff performance appraisals. Maintains documentation of work performance and behaviors.
29. Guides, directs, and counsels staff regarding performance, problem solving, decision making and behaviors. Ensures that staff complies with SOMC Code of Conduct, uses AIDET, uses AHEART, follows Red Rules, and follows safety policies.
30. Assists manager with coaching and corrective actions when necessary.
31. Assists manager with staff meetings. Regularly communicates with staff. Promotes positive intradepartmental relationships.
32. Performs and monitors preventative maintenance, troubleshoots and repairs equipment. Contacts outside personnel when appropriate. Maintains documentation of maintenance and service records.
33. Ensures staff deliver a high level of customer service. Promptly investigates customer complaints. Follows up with patients and patient relations as appropriate.
34. Makes self readily available for staff and customer needs.
35. Acts as a Technical Consultant when performing competencies.
36. Performs other duties as assigned.
