Job Summary:
The Bariatric Dietitian provides Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to individuals for nutrition-related problems and preventive health measures as they apply to bariatric surgery and adult weight loss. Primary responsibilities include: assessing and monitoring the nutritional health of bariatric patients, developing and implementing individualized nutrition care plans, providing nutrition counseling for individuals, families, and groups, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary health care team to facilitate continuity of care at home and in the community.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Assesses client’s dietary patterns, lifestyle, food purchasing practices and resources, weight history, and ability to comply with lifestyle changes.
- Works with clients to develop and implement individualized nutrition care plans in accordance with evidence-based standards of care, the client’s medical therapy goals, and nutrition prescription.
- Assists patients in developing realistic, long-term health goals and goal-directed behaviors.
- Evaluates care plan effectiveness and measures progress towards outcomes of medical nutrition therapy interventions.
- Reassesses the nutrition care process and implements changes as indicated.
- Provides appropriate follow-up in accordance with patient’s treatment goals, referring patients for community services as appropriate.
- Coordinates care with a multi-disciplinary treatment team to include bariatric staff, outpatient, and hospital care providers.
- Provides client with appropriate nutrient supplementation and treatment interventions as needed.
- Documents patient evaluation, treatment, and progress to accurately reflect the services provided and patient progress.
- Participates in Bariatric Weight Loss Center educational and promotional activities internally and publicly.
- Conducts the Multi-Disciplinary Program for every surgical patient to include in-person and online classes, gathering and documenting necessary information; ie: monthly meeting attendance and patient’s weight.
- Composes and submits necessary completion letter for insurance prior approval.
- Runs monthly support group for pre- and post-op patients.
- Assists with meeting the criteria for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation & Quality Improvement Program.
- Participates in planning and development of nutrition-related policies, procedures, and goals.
- Identifies and collects Performance Improvement data, monitors outcomes, and initiates corrective actions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Registered Dietitian (RD), Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), or Registered Nurse (RN), required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Bariatric or Outpatient Dietitian or 2 years of patient education experience which includes weight management counseling, required.
- Member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, desirable.
- Member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgeons (ASBS), desirable.
- Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics), desirable.
