Job Description

The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for Y-USA’s internal operations and supporting the needs of member associations across the country. The COO will work closely with and complement the skillsets of the CEO, focusing primarily on enhancing internal processes and systems to ensure operational excellence. This collaboration enables that the CEO can concentrate on supporting existing relationships and expanding on new partnerships to benefit the
Movement.



  • Strategic Planning and Implementation: Collaborate closely with the CEO and senior leadership to develop
    and execute plans for operational infrastructure, process improvements, and team development. This includes
    translating the vision and strategies developed by the board and the CEO into actionable steps to enhance
    organizational efficiency and align with Y-USA’s mission and goals.
  • Financial and Governance Management: Partner with the CEO and the Finance Team to ensure the
    organization’s financial health through budget oversight, forecasting, and resource management.
  • Operational Excellence: Enhance organizational processes and systems for improved efficiency.
    Strategically delegate tasks to maintain progress and ensure operational continuity. Develop efforts to track,
    analyze, interpret, and communicate performance metrics. Use data to highlight efficiencies, improve
    cross-team collaboration, and empower the organization to devote more attention to specific high-impact
    programs.
  • Team Collaboration and Growth: Lead, support and advise a team to achieve organizational objectives
    while building an internal team culture of accountability, excellence, and innovation. Ensure that all levels of
    management have the appropriate skills, training, and authority to support a culture of empowerment, service,
    and accountability. Create an environment where ALL employees feel valued and that their contributions and
    ideas are welcome.
  • Movement and External Relations and Engagement: Establish and maintain relationships with leaders
    across the Y Movement to identify needs, programs, and services to increase value and participation.
    Represent the organization in external forums to enhance its profile and impact, as needed. Ensure that
    YMCAs believe that the outcomes and deliverables of Y-USA exceed the expectations of their membership dues.

Qualifications

The COO will be a leader with extensive executive-level experience in an organization with a significant level of
complexity and sophistication.

  • An undergraduate degree from a four-year college or university. Graduate degree in business administration,
    management, or related field is preferred.
  • Business and Financial Acumen: Demonstrated knowledge of sound business practices and financial
    management in a nonprofit context.
  • Significant experience working within either a for-profit franchise business model, or a federated not-for-profit
    model with multiple constituents.
  • Nonprofit Sector Experience: This could include both direct and/or board nonprofit experience with finance,
    operations, human resources and technology.
  • Organizational Development: Proven track record in leading organizational change and development.

Essential Functions


The following goals and objectives have been identified as priorities for the Y-USA COO:

  • Establish professional and personal credibility among the Board, the Y Movement, Y-USA leadership and
    staff, donors, partner organizations, and other key constituents.
  • Validate and contribute to the organization’s strategic plan and operating goals, leading Y-USA to reach its
    potential.
  • Parter with the leaders of IT, Shared Services, Finance, HR and Network Experience to ensure that all internal
    functions of the Y-USA operate effectively and efficiently.
  • Ensure Y-USA has a high-functioning and diverse leadership team. Set the tone for a highly collaborative and
    supportive culture within the organization. Be viewed as an excellent communicator who can coach, teach,
    learn from and inspire others to accomplish their goals.
  • Develop goals and objectives and hold individuals accountable for performance. Ensure strong internal
    operating procedures and policies are in place and drive alignment of individual performance with overall YUSA goals and objectives.
  • Ensure accountability and high performance through the creation of structures and processes that lead to
    increased value, satisfaction and participation from YMCAs.
  • Partner with leadership to further identify and create programs and services that provide support for the Y
    Movement and its diverse needs.
  • Support the advancement of digital transformation to support the needs of member associations and the
    communities they serve.
  • Drive efforts to ensure the strong financial and operational performance of Y-USA
