Course Description

PH 500: Investigating Public Health Issues is an interdisciplinary, team-taught course in the MPH core curriculum. This course utilizes an integrated and project-based learning approach to investigating the causes and effects of public health issues. In this course, students will learn how to investigate and define a pressing public health issue using evidence-based approaches to public health, including calculating and interpreting epidemiological measures and performing statistical analyses in R. Students will learn how to identify appropriate resources to support the investigation of how key factors, such as nutritional, environmental, healthcare access, and social determinants of health, impact their team’s public health issue. Students will learn to analyze the relative contribution of these factors through key public health frameworks, such as the social ecological model, and through a systems-based approach to public health. Students will develop essential public health knowledge and skills by creating authentic, practice-oriented public health products that address a current and significant public health issue.

PubHlth 500 is a 6-credit course taken in the fall semester of the first year in the MPH program. Together with PubHlth 501: Developing Solutions to Public Health Issues (offered in winter of the first year), these two courses make up the residential MPH Core Curriculum. Team-driven exploration of today’s pressing public health issues is a cornerstone of the MPH Core.
