Your New Role

This internship will be located in the NYC area. The selected intern will be expected to join us in the office on a regular cadence based on the intern manager’s in office schedule. The HBO/Max Rights & Clearances team is looking for someone with an interest in the legal and business side of television to assist our department with clearing the music, footage and photos used in HBO documentaries and sports programming. Our department guides productions regarding rights needed for 3rd party material and reviews contracts and music cue sheets related to the programming.



Your Role Accountabilities

  • Legal Research: Interns will enhance skills by reviewing contracts, intellectual property rights, and legal agreements relevant to media production
  • Exposure to Contracts: Exposure with drafting and negotiating rights agreements, including footage, music, and talent contracts
  • Copyright Understanding: Learn copyright law fundamentals as they apply to the entertainment industry, focusing on securing rights for distribution
  • Problem-Solving: Identify legal issues in production and suggest solutions under professional guidance
  • Database Management: Gain practical skills in managing and organizing legal documents and reporting
  • Review incoming music and footage licenses
  • Review and create music cue sheets
  • Identify 3rd party material that needs to be cleared
  • Assist with simple license agreements
  • Hands-on work with passionate, talented team members in your field

Qualifications & Experience


  • Interest in Rights & Clearances, contracts and licensing
  • Pursuing a career in legal
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Well organized and able to work independently
  • Must be actively enrolled in an accredited college or university degree program for the full duration of the internship (proof of enrollment required)
  • Must be a rising Junior or Senior Undergrad (18 years or older)
  • Must be in academic good standing (3.0 or above cumulative GPA)
  • Warner Bros. Discovery will only consider candidates who are presently authorized to work for any employer in the United States and who will not require work visa sponsorship from Warner Bros. Discovery now or in the future in order to retain their authorization to work in the United States. Candidates currently on any student or exchange visa, including F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, J-1, M-1, etc., will not be eligible for the internship program.

What to know before applying:

  • The duration of the summer program regardless of which start/end option is 11 weeks.

  • Program date options:

  • Option 1: June 2nd – August 15th

  • Option 2: June 9th – August 22nd

  • Interns will be expected to work 35-40 hours per week in a hybrid capacity.

  • Our internships are paid opportunities with a competitive hourly wage. Credit is not required; however, we will provide the necessary documentation for school credit if desired. Relocation is not provided.

  • Interviewing will take place from February through mid-April. A WBD team member will contact you if your experiences and interests match an open internship position. Due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to give individual status updates.

In compliance with local law, we are disclosing the compensation for roles in locations where legally required. Pay Rate: $19 per hour USD for undergrad interns.
