Physical Requirements
This position requires regularly sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods of time and performing tasks with repetitive motions (such as typing). Also involves some exposure to loud noises, blood-borne/airborne pathogens, and combative/violent people.
Shift
Day shift, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Other days/times as assigned per departmental needs.
Job Summary
UK HealthCare is seeking an experienced Insurance Authorization Specialist to join our team in providing standardized, high-quality authorization support for medical departments. This role plays a critical part in securing pre-authorizations for tests and procedures to ensure timely patient care and accurate billing compliance.
Reporting to the Manager of Centralized Payer Authorizations, the Outplaced Insurance Authorization Specialist will interact frequently with patients, physicians, and insurance providers. Responsibilities include verifying patient eligibility, navigating insurance guidelines, and working with third-party payers to obtain necessary approvals as well as providing Estimates and pathways for Financial Clearance where applicable.
Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple payer processes. Proficiency in medical terminology and basic coding knowledge (ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS) is preferred. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while demonstrating exceptional customer service, problem-solving abilities, and compliance with HIPAA regulations.
This position involves extended periods of seated work and requires adaptability to evolving insurance policies and guidelines.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Knowledge and experience in medical coding (ICD-10 and CPT) as well as medical terminology is highly recommended. Excellent communication skills and the ability to multi-task and stay organized in a fast-paced environment are needed, as well as knowledge of the insurance authorization process. This position requires exceptional customer service skills.
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities? No
Preferred Education/Experience
Associate degree in a healthcare-related field and at least five years of healthcare employment experience preferred; understanding of CPT, ICD-9, and ICD-10 codes is highly preferred.
