Job Summary
The Manager is responsible for supporting the commercialization of transformative medical innovations discovered by leading researchers and clinicals at Mass General Brigham. The Manager supports the sourcing, structuring and negotiating of license agreements and collaborative research agreements. The role is guided by senior team members in engagements with industry representatives, potential investors, and hospital based innovators from Mass General Brigham.
Overall Responsibilities:
• Assists an Associate Director in management of a large portfolio of medical innovations, including participation in business development activities, commercial assessment of early stage inventions and management of intellectual property.
• Participates in developing strategies to optimize the commercial impact of key and emerging Mass General Brigham discoveries, inventions and other technological capabilities through sourcing, structuring, negotiation of licensing and collaborative agreements.
• Drafts and iterates licensing and sponsored research agreements with guidance from senior team members.
Invention Assessment
• Prepares and presents on commercial potential, translational readiness, and value of early stage inventions, including assessment of commercial market, unmet need, patentability, and stage of development.
Intellectual Property
• Manages and develops strategy for IP filings, prosecution and maintenance.
Deal-Making
• Develops commercialization strategies to optimize commercial impact of Mass General Brigham discoveries, including identification and engagement of potential licensees, investors, and collaborators.
• Leads internal due diligence of commercialization pathways and potential licensees.
• Leads the structuring, drafting and negotiation of low complexity agreements.
• With support from a senior team member, assists with the drafting, structuring and negotiation of complex agreements, such as term sheets, options, research agreements and licenses.
Portfolio Management
• Supports senior team member with managing, protecting, and licensing a portfolio of ~400 medical innovations.
• Effectively interfaces with and manages existing licensees.
• Implements internal processes to enable the successful management of a specific IP portfolio.
Leadership
• Independently leads key deliverables within portfolio of medical technologies and assigned interactions with inventors, patent attorneys, and other stakeholders.
• Consistently represents and positions Mass General Brigham in external interactions and gains the confidence, trust and respect of clinicians, scientists, investors, corporate executives, entrepreneurs and administrators.
• Possible local travel to Mass General Brigham sites.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in science, engineering, life sciences or healthcare economics required.
- PhD with minimum of 1 year directly relevant business development, licensing, IP management, technology commercialization or deal making experience, or
- Master’s degree in business, law or sciences with a minimum of 3 years of directly relevant business development, licensing, IP management, technology commercialization or deal making experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong understanding of intellectual property rights, licensing models, and technology commercialization processes.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of intellectual property laws, licensing regulations, and industry best practices.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
- Ability to think strategically, identify market opportunities, and align licensing strategies with organizational goals.
