REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Core Lab Managers


GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Core Lab Manager. The Medical Laboratory Technician’s primary job function is to perform and assess laboratory tests and procedures. Performs quality control, routine maintenance and other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
• Associate Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent required

Licensure:
• MLT or AMT licensure by ASCP required


Experience:
• Experience preferred

• Ability to interact effectively with patients, patient family members, co-workers, and physicians/providers. Shows concern and respect for others by dealing with customers and co-workers in a compassionate, sensitive, and responsive manner.



Essential Technical/Motor Skills:
• Hand/eye coordination in order to perform examinations using complex equipment using precise calibrations.

Essential Physical Requirements:
• Must stand and/or walk 75% of work hours per day while processing specimens, performing tests and specimen collection. Sits 25% of work hours performing tests and/or completing documentation.



Essential Mental Requirements:
• Ability to follow established procedures. Ability to pay close attention to detail when collecting specimens and performing testing. Requires the ability to adjust to fluctuating workload and meet established deadlines.

Essential Sensory Requirements:
• Requires good vision and color discrimination to perform testing. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively when responding to routine inquiries and reporting results.



Exposure to Hazards:
• Exposure to bio-hazardous materials, needles and infectious diseases in clinical laboratory and patient care environments. Chemical exposure in laboratory testing areas. Frequently exposed to noise.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS



The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Performs pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical diagnostic testing on blood and other biological specimens using automated and non-automated instrumentation as per established procedures. Includes proper patient ID, specimen preparation and dilution. Assess and correlates test results before reporting. Processes specimens and prioritizes tasks in order to meet expected turnaround times.
2. Performs and documents quality control and quality assurance data. Documents all quality control failures and corrective actions taken. Reports documentation to supervisor/manager for review. Participates in proficiency survey testing program.
3. Performs and record routine daily maintenance and resolves minor problems. Notifies section manager of all problems and action taken.
4. Keeps work area clean and orderly. Follows all safety policies and procedures. Prepares and labels reagents, controls and stock solutions. Helps maintain supply inventory.
5. Performs phlebotomy and EKG’s as assigned. Prepares specimens for distribution to work areas. Processes microbiology specimens as required. Prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratories.
6. Performs clerical and computer tasks and procedures as required.
7. Participates in orientation of new employees and students.
8. Performs calibrations as assigned. All documentation reported to section manager for review.
9. Participates in the updating of procedure manuals.
