Duties

  • Collection, analysis, and reporting of terrestrial and aquatic resource data for the qualitative and quantitative inventory and monitoring of vegetation, soil, and water resources and the associated wildlife habitat.
  • Analyze natural resource monitoring and assessment data at multiple scales, considering the underlying sampling design and associated statistical assumptions.
  • Coordinate the preparation of reporting and analyses documents to support decision-making.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to state, district, and field offices, implementing coordinated training efforts, and providing consistency in training material within the organization.
  • Provide support to motivate, train, and mentor state, district or field office personnel as necessary.
  • Expertise in leading or performing professional, research, or scientific work involving the study of the relationships of organisms with each other, with their physical and chemical environments, and with society.

You must first meet one of the following Individual Occupational Requirements to be eligible for this position:
For the General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences (0401) Series:

  1. Degree: Biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR
  2. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

For the Ecology (0408) Series:


  1. Degree: Biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity. Specialized experience for this position includes but is not limited to: (1) serving as the technical expert for the collection, analysis, and reporting of terrestrial and aquatic resource data; (2) applying the principles of ecology to a multiple-use management program; (3) recommending program priorities and/or objectives to be accomplished in an annual work plan; (4) mentoring and leading staff in the development of monitoring and training priorities.

Physical Demands: The incumbent will typically work in an office setting where some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items is required. Work may also require travel to the field where physical activity involves walking long distances, bending, or climbing over rough, steep, and/or rocky terrain.



Work Environment: The work is performed in an office setting, but there will be occasional trips to the field. Field work may involve exposure to moderate risks and discomforts such as adverse weather conditions.

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, or a combination of education and experience—courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
