Description

As a Music Therapy Fellow, you will assess and meaningfully interact with infants, children, youth, adults and families by providing music therapy activities for individuals and groups at UCLA Health.


You will:

  • Creates and maintain therapeutic developmentally appropriate environments for infants, children, youth, adults and families.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate music as a primary tool in assessing and meeting psychosocial needs.
  • Interpret the patient’s perception of his/her diagnosis and treatment as revealed through music and other means of communication both verbal and non-verbal.    
  • Demonstrate, explain and/or provides stress reduction techniques to facilitate adaptive coping, matching developmental level, emotional state, situation and stressor.
  • Provide emotional support during identified stress points and utilizes music therapy techniques to facilitate adaptive coping for patients and family members.      
  • Uses music therapy as a diagnostic and treatment tool.
  • Advocates on behalf of patient to other hospital staff as necessary so that the best environment for positive coping is provided.


Salary range: $30 hourly



Contract may convert to career.

Qualifications
  • Music Therapy Fellows are required to have a completed Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy.
  • Board certification in Music Therapy is required within six months of hire.
  • Documented completion of at least 1000 hours of clinical internship under the supervision of a Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC, CMT, RMT, MTA) is required.
  • Experience working with children, adolescents and adults in a medical setting is required.  Experience working with patients on palliative care with children/premature infants in a healthcare setting is highly desired. Experience with end-of-life care highly desired.
  • Skill in assessment and intervention planning for infants, children, youth, adults and families developmental and psychosocial functioning must be demonstrated.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and relationship building skills are required.
  • Must have basic computer knowledge and word processing skills (frequently used).
  • Must have basic knowledge to operate and maintain equipment for individual and group music programs (e.g. maracas, guitar, CD player, recording equipment etc.) Experience in music engineering/recording software highly desired, specifically experience creating heartbeat legacy songs.
