*Non-certified trainees must be able to successfully complete the Police Academy and State of Florida Police exam.


Must pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph, psychological, medical, and drug screen. Must successfully pass a physical agility test within the last 6 months prior to application as administered by a certified FDLE training center. Applicants must have successfully completed a swim test administered by a certified FDLE training center. 



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 


  1. Must be a minimum of 21 years old at the time of employment;
  2. Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of employment, a valid FL State driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any State;
  3. No Felony convictions and disqualifying criminal histories
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen;
  5. Must be able to read and write the English language;
  6. Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits
  7. Applicants that reside within Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe or Palm Beach counties must pass a full physical agility test (modified agility test not accepted) and swim test prior to application. Swim test is waived for a lateral if the candidate has taken and passed a swim test at least once in their career. Applicants who reside outside of the aforementioned counties must pass a full physical agility test and swim test as part of the second phase of their background investigation. Out of State applicants must submit a written statement indicating an acknowledgment of requirements for physical agility and swim test to be completed at a later date when uploading the required documents with application.
  8. Must attend and successfully complete a basic Police Officer Academy and successfully take and pass the State Police Officer Exam

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  1. Must have a minimum of 60 or more completed college credits that include general studies; and, a High School diploma/GED or have two (2) or more years of U.S. military service with an Honorable Discharge; or two (2) years of law enforcement experience as a Certified Police Officer.

Police Officer Pension Plan/Retirement:

  • Sworn Personnel are in a Defined Benefit Plan: City Contribution 27.696%; Employee Contribution 10.775%
  • Defined Benefit Plan: 22.5 years of credited service, regardless of age; or age 57 with 10 years of credited service; 5 year DROP

Voluntary Retirement Plans:


  • 457 pre-tax retirement plan
  • Roth IRA retirement plan

Disability Insurance:

  • Long-term disability is provided with a minimum of 50% salary coverage up to $5,000/month.
  • Short-term disability replaces a portion of earnings while unable to work due to non-work related illness or injury.

Vacation Leave:

  • Employees with less than 4 years service receive 80 hours vacation per year

Personal Leave:

  • Employees are entitled to 24 hours of personal leave per calendar year


Sick Leave:

  • Employees accrue 8 hours sick leave per month
  • Employees who do not utilize sick leave for a six month period are eligible for an additional 8 hours of vacation
  • Employees leaving the City are eligible for up to 100% payout for unused sick leave based on length of service up to a maximum of 800 hours

Bereavement Leave:

  • The City allows 4 days leave for in-state funerals and 5 days for out of state funerals

Educational Reimbursement:


  • The City offers a 75% reimbursement of tuition costs for employees completing a course with a “B” or better
  • Reimbursement is based on the rate of tuition charged in the state university system.

Take Home Vehicles:

  • Based on unit assignments like FTO, Detectives, K-9, SWAT, Traffic, SRO, Marine Patrol

Police Officer & Police Communications Officer/Public Safety Dispatcher Recruitment Incentives:

  • Up to $2,000 for recruit reimbursement for recently graduated candidates from a Florida Certified Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Up to $1,000 for an Out-of-State Law Enforcement candidate completing Equivalency of Training (EOT) to become a Certified Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Florida. 
  • A $2,000 incentive will be paid to a PCO who successfully completes the Phase I, Call Taker training.
  • $2,000 for relocation allotment for any newly hired Police Officer who resides outside of either Miami-Dade or Broward County and relocates to either Miami-Dade or Broward County within six (6) months of hire.


DUTIES

Performs police patrol, preliminary investigations, traffic regulation and enforcement, enforces criminal laws and makes arrests for felony and misdemeanor offenses and other law enforcement activities. Police officers may be assigned to various units within the police department to include but not limited to: Road Patrol, Detective Bureau, Traffic Unit, Training Unit, Street Crimes Unit, Marine Patrol, etc.

Candidates currently enrolled in a Law Enforcement Academy/Basic Recruit Class may apply to the position meeting the basic requirements. All required documents must be submitted with the application with the exemption of the state certification. Candidates are required to submit verification of enrollment at Law Enforcement Academy/Basic Recruit Class (i.e. Acceptance letter).
