Summary:

The Program Director Clinical Pastoral Education is responsible for coordinating the activities and programs of Clinical Pastoral Education offered throughout the System. This position is also responsible for conducting the Clinical Pastoral Education programs under the standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). The Program Director will develop curriculum, supervise students? clinical work, provide educational opportunities, and evaluate students. The Program Director will plan and administer the overall educational program for CHRISTUS Health, including the development and oversight for the CPE Program budget. This position will coordinate the provision of clinical pastoral education to students and provide pastoral care to patients, their support persons, and staff.



Responsibilities:

?Ensures compliance and accountability with all applicable quality and accreditation standards consistent with ACPE in all programs of ACPE offered by the CHRISTUS Health System.
?Responsible for all communication, reports, accreditation processes, and financial elements relative to ACPE.
?Identifies CH System CPE priorities in consultation the System PAG and the System Director for Spiritual Care Services.
?Maintains channels of communication to ensure effective performance appropriate to the Administrative Supervisor position.
?Shares responsibility (with Management in Component Sites) for evaluating the performance of component site CPE Certified Educators.
?In collaboration with component site management, assists with recruitment, hiring, evaluation, corrective action and termination of Certified Educators, Associate Certified Educators, and Certified Educator Candidates.
?Accountable for supportive and educational activities in the institution and community, and continuing education and service goals.
?Develops and oversees the CPE Education budget, maintains appropriate margins, and reports to the System Director of Spiritual Care Services.
?Ability and background to function with internal partners, external churches, and community stakeholders.
?Works with the System PAG and System Director for Spiritual Care Services to identify and develop best practices within the System CPE program.
?Is accountable to the System PAG and System Director for Spiritual Care Services to set and accomplish goals for the System CPE program.
?Functions to support effective interaction among component site Certified Educators for professional growth and development.
?Works with the System PAG and the System PAG Chair to ensure effective functioning of the PAG.
?Promotes, organizes, implements, and manages programs in Clinical Pastoral Education department.
?Works with management, peers, chaplains, and students to identify areas of improvement and to coordinate changes through the plan, do, study, and act cycle.
?Accountable for supportive and educational activities in the institution and community, and continuing education and service goals.
?Ability and background to function with internal partners, external churches, and community stakeholders.
?Works with the component site Professional Advisory Group (PAG) and the component site PAG Chair to ensure effective functioning of the PAG.
?Ability to assess the CPE needs in areas not currently served by a CPE component site.
?Administrative ability to ensure attention to timelines, detail, financial issues, and accountability in CHRISTUS Health and in ACPE.
?Capable of providing support and promoting creative program development at the component sites and supporting component site distinctiveness and related collegiality among component site Certified Educators.
?Develop distance-learning programs, standards, policies and resources.
?Maintain a leadership style that can manage accountability without micromanaging.
?Encourage and support development of Certified Educator Candidate curriculum.
?Effectively engage and communicate with Spiritual Care Directors in CHRISTUS Health.
?Have a vision and advocacy for CPE and resources across CHRISTUS Health.
?Conduct timely recruitment of students, admission interviews, communicate admission decisions, and handle application materials in a professional manner.
?Respect and protect students? rights to have a quality CPE experience through appropriate clinical assignment, on-call duty, peer group experience, and excellent supervision.
?Evaluate students? personal and professional functioning, complete ACPE registration forms for students who have finished their program and write an evaluative report in accordance with the ACPE Standards.
?Assign and review comments on students? written materials in a timely manner.
?On the System level, participates as a member of the department Management Team (Mission Integration) to organize and facilitate the effective functioning and collaboration of the departmental combination of Certified Educators, chaplains, chaplain residents, and interns.
?On the component site level, participates as a member of the department Management Team (Spiritual Care), organizes, and facilitates effective functioning of the component site CPE program within the department and facility.
?Provide and facilitate quality pastoral care to patients, staff, families, and visitors, through students as assigned.
?Design creative curriculum for student-centered learning.
?Develop the CHRISTUS Health CPE programs, as needed.
?Other tasks and functions may be assigned as needed to fulfill the mission of the organization.
?Must have knowledge of theology, usually obtained through a Master of Divinity degree or equivalent.
?Must have affiliation endorsement and/or ordination in a religious community.
?Must possess knowledge of diverse religious traditions and the ability to minister to and educate persons with diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
?Must have quality education, patient care, communication, and crisis intervention skills.
?Must have excellent communication skills across at all levels of Associate and Leadership within CHRISTUS Health.
?Must be knowledgeable in the fields of theology, educational theory, personality growth and development, ethics in health care and behavioral sciences.
?Must have knowledge of the action/reflection model of Clinical Pastoral Education and the ability to educate in this area.
?Must have knowledge of effective educational practices and theories, assessment of needs, and implementation of programs of education.
?Must be able to recruit enough students to assist the system-wide programming.
?Must be able to maintain ACPE Accreditation oversight for CH System.
?Regular presence and engagement at the CH System office (as negotiated with the System Director for Spiritual Care Services.).
?Travel across the System is required.



Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Divinity, Theology or a related field required. 
  • Minimum 5 years? experience as a CPE Certified Educator with at least 2 years in a management/supervisory role. 
  • At least 5 years? experience as a chaplain in the health care setting. 
  • Certification as an ACPE Certified Educator or Associate Certified Educator required. 
  • Certification as a Chaplain in the NACC or APC required. 
  • Denominational Endorsement.
