Duties

As a Public Affairs Specialist, GS-13 you will perform the following duties:

  • Researches, analyzes, and applies appropriate public affairs protocol according to established instruction, directives and policy guidance, and procedures, ensuring activities comply with agency requirements;
  • Plans and executes a public affairs program that supports directors’ priorities through the integration of media relations and social media;
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with national and international media representatives;
  • Researches, interprets, drafts, coordinates, produces, and reviews public affairs products such as news releases, talking points, fact sheets, news and feature articles, web-based content, briefings, speeches, and scripts; and
  • Prepares newsletters, photographs, videos, and other materials that effectively communicate agency activities, programs, and policies to a variety of internal and external audiences.

Specialized Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-11 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as:


  • Preparing a variety of communication products and materials. (i.e. writing news articles, developing talking points, drafting fact sheets);
  • Managing relationships with media relations professionals. (i.e. Local/regional press, government, or stakeholder public affairs offices); AND

  • Fosters relationships with internal and external stakeholders and/or media outlets; AND
  • Provides information on national or policy-level issues in response to media queries or public interest.
