Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapy Supervisor within the Adult Respiratory Care Department will supervise patient care activities, department staff and provide educational functions for the department in University Hospital, Cardiovascular Center and University Hospital South. The position is responsible for promoting continuous patient safety and quality improvement by supporting the mission, vision, values and goals of the department and University of Michigan Health System. This role requires sound experience as a respiratory therapist and the ability to lead and engage staff in the delivery of patient care services. This position is responsible to the Administrative Director of the adult section.

Responsibilities*

Job duties include but at not limited to:


  • Functions as a clinical training supervisor and is trained in all competencies specific to patient populations receiving care.
  • Ensures the competency of the staff under their direction and evaluates and reviews the performance of technicians and therapists and recommends pay increases.
  • Initiates performance improvement and management processes include disciplinary actions if warranted. This includes coaching and advising employees on work, behavioral and career matters.
  • Schedules and assigns work for the technical staff and assures patient care services are delivered as ordered.
  • This role is also responsible for evaluating, upgrading, and development of new policies and procedures. This encompasses assuring for accurate and complete entries on all medical-legal documents of the personnel working on their designated shift, including HER documentation.
  • Instructs and inservices personnel on new technical devices, related clinical policies/procedures and administrative policies. Avails oneself for consultation on respiratory care procedures for medical, nursing and other hospital staff.
  • Holds regularly scheduled meetings with the respiratory care personnel
  • Assures that patient safety events are reported in the appropriate manner and investigates, creates recommendations for corrective actions or intervenes to return service levels to the appropriate level.
  • Assures the quality of respiratory care procedures by checking patient charts, observing therapy, assisting therapists in clinical situations, evaluating modalities and frequencies of therapy.
  • Responsible for the initiation, follow-up and assurance that Department and Hospital policies and procedures are followed.
  • Assists department senior leadership and other hospital officials in special projects and assignments.
  • Responsible for the attendance and participation of technicians and therapists at staff meetings, in-services, and other continuing education programs and attends all appropriate staff and management meetings.
  • Systematically troubleshoots problems and implements corrective measures/solutions to improve processes or compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Understands and utilizes lean approaches and techniques in their everyday work.
  • Required to participate in and help coordinate the in-service education for general staff, physicians, nursing staff and students on patient care modalities or equipment usage.
  • Responsible for assisting with coordinating staff resources to support research projects as well as instituting and participating in their own studies and projects. This includes presenting papers and posters at meetings and state/national medical conferences.

Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum requirement is a baccalaureate degree in science, education, respiratory care, or another related field and a degree in Respiratory Therapy
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) with at least 2 years of demonstrated experience in critical care as a respiratory therapist.
  • Active license as a Respiratory Therapist by Michigan Department of Community Healths Board of Respiratory Care.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare practitioners.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all basic and advanced respiratory care techniques as related to cardio-pulmonary disease management and current with new respiratory devices and procedures.
  • Demonstrates the ability to listen and communicate efficiently (both verbally and in written forms).
  • Exhibits and can demonstrate managerial qualities such as organizational skills, project planning, root cause analysis, problem solving and resolving conflict, as well as, react to emergent situations.

  • Exhibits sound skills in the use of Word, Excel and other software tools with the ability to understand research methodology, mathematical solutions and statistical relationships.

Additional Information

This position involves considerable physical and mental effort in job duties, ie, assisting patients, moving equipment, bending, periods of standing, and comforting, and emotionally supporting patients, families and staff. It also involves frequent possibility of exposure to infectious diseases, high-pressure medical gases, and working in potentially hazardous environments.



Background Screening
