The Position

2025 Summer Intern – Protein Sciences (Nucleic Acid Drug Discovery)

Department Summary:


The Oligonucleotide-Based Drug Discovery group operates within the Protein Sciences department, is fully established with state-of-the-art synthesis, analysis and purification capabilities. Our group is highly interdisciplinary and dedicated to pioneer novel oligonucleotide platforms at Genentech.

We are excited to offer an outstanding summer internship opportunity for self-motivated and enthusiastic candidates with a keen interest in oligonucleotide-based drug discovery. This internship program is crafted to provide a dynamic learning environment, strengthen analytical and creative problem-solving skills. Throughout the internship, you will have the chance to actively contribute to impactful technology projects that play a pivotal role in shaping our portfolio projects. This opportunity provides hands-on experience, allowing you to expand your lab bench skills.



This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA, on site

Key Responsibilities:


The selected candidate will be integral to our oligonucleotide therapeutic drug discovery research lab, contributing to the development of a comprehensive therapeutic discovery strategy across various therapeutic areas. Key responsibilities include:

  • Work on state-of-the-art automated oligonucleotide synthesizers with different synthesis scales.
  • Actively participate in the method development and purification processes, utilizing preparative and analytical HPLC (RP & IEX) and SEC techniques for novel oligonucleotides.
  • Conduct thorough literature reviews to gain insights into oligonucleotide design and proposing and executing nucleic acid chemistry plans.
  • Apply troubleshooting expertise in oligonucleotide impurity profiling and demonstrating strong data analysis skills.
  • Collect the experimental data and deliver a comprehensive scientific presentation at the 2024 Intern Poster Day.

Program Highlights:


  • Intensive 12-weeks , full time (40 hours per week).
  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required):

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:


  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required majors: Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology or other related majors.

Required skills:


  • Chemical synthesis, HPLC purification and understanding of cellular pharmacology is plus
  • Project objective crafted based on candidate experience.
  • Background knowledge in oligonucleotide chemistry or solid phase synthesis is a strong plus.
  • Possess excellent analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual skills.
  • Establishes a record of accomplishment in teamwork, adaptability, innovation, initiative, and integrity.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.


The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is $45-$50 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
