Duties

  • Manage law enforcement program through education, patrol, monitoring, apprehension, and investigation.
  • Prepare and review case incident records and other law enforcement reports as required by the incident reporting system.

1 position available. This is the District Ranger position in the Mead District of Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The duty station is at Boulder Beach Ranger Station located in Boulder Beach, NV. The District Ranger directs a highly complex resource management and visitor protection program. The district is comprised of three major visitor use areas including Echo Bay, Callville Bay, Boulder Beach within the area of Lake Mead. These includes two developed areas with marinas, employee housing, Ranger stations, campgrounds, boat ramps, marina stores, restaurants, an air strip, picnic areas, trailer villages, launch ramps, a multiagency Government boat dock, maintenance areas, swim beaches, and Cabin sites. The area includes approximately 216 miles of maintained roads and approximately 100 miles of exterior boundary.

2 positions available is located within Golden Gate National Recreation Area, a National Park Service Unit in the Pacific West Region. Golden Gate National Recreation Area spans over 82,000 acres in the California counties of Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo with an annual visitation of over 19,000,000 visitors. Golden Gate NRA has exclusive, concurrent, and proprietary jurisdiction that can be extremely remote or within a densely populated urban environment. The primary duty of this position is supervising two shifts of law enforcement officers. The incumbent and their staff respond to a wide variety of law enforcement calls for service and self-initiated enforcement activity. It is not uncommon to conduct multiple felony investigations each day, often involving drugs, weapons, or victims of crime. Other emergency incidents include search and rescue, providing emergency medical care, and responding to motor vehicle collisions. The incumbent will work closely with local law enforcement, Fire/EMS and SAR agencies on a variety of incidents. The incumbent will respond and supervise security for wildland and urban fires. The incumbent will work with resource management on projects and investigations as needed in both terrestrial and marine environments. Golden Gate is a field training park. The incumbent will supervise two subordinate supervisors who each supervise one of four shifts. There are a day and night shift Sunday through Wednesday, and a day and night shift Wednesday through Saturday. The work schedule is four (4) ten-hour shifts and may work nights, holidays, and weekends. Shift start and end times do not change throughout the year. The incumbent will supervise two subordinate supervisors who each supervise approximately six law enforcement officers.

  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Selectee will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and required to maintain firearm proficiency and be subject to the Lautenberg Amendment.

Qualifications

  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: (1) leading the investigation of alleged violations of laws or regulations related to the protection, conservation, use, or management of natural/cultural resources; (2) protecting officials against threats to personal safety (3) developing and Implementing policies related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations (4) collaborating with other law enforcement agencies . Physical Demands: Boulder City Nevada- (LAKE)-The incumbent in this position must maintain good physical condition and must be able to pass the fitness and medical screening standards as described in NPS RM 57. Work demands range from periods of office work (sitting, standing, and walking), to strenuous periods of extreme physical and mental activity. Sleep deprivation may be a factor due to high incident call volumes. Work in this position involves repeated bending, stooping, stretching, heavy lifting, and moving of heavy patients and equipment. The incumbent must be able to fly in a fixed wing aircraft and must not have any unreasonable phobias with regards to heights, water, fire, or contact with the general public



San Francisco California (GOGA)– Some assignments involve basic sedentary work with some walking, bending, standing and light lifting. In other assignments there is the requirement for sustained physical stamina during prolonged emergencies such as law enforcement, wildland firefighting, search and technical cliff rescue. For these reasons, incumbent must be able to maintain required physical fitness levels as outlined in DO-57.

Working Conditions: Boulder City, Nevada (LAKE)- The work environment ranges from sedentary office work to field work with exposure to severe natural elements. Work is done in temperatures which may range from below freezing to 125- degree Fahrenheit, and may be performed in snow, rain and high winds and at elevations ranging from 500 feet to 8,000 feet above sea level. Physical hazards exist in fire control. search and rescue, law enforcement and emergency medical situations. Indoor work includes routine office work and attendance at numerous meetings, both in and out of the park. May deal with long periods of intense visitor related or administrative activities. Managerial demands occasionally require extended hours, both day and night, often with short deadlines.



San Francisco, CA (GOGA) -Some assignments are mostly indoors with no exposure to significant hazards or discomfort. Other assignments involve substantial outdoor work at all hours of the day or night with some exposure to adverse weather and poison oak, the discomfort and minor hazards of manual work, and infrequent intermittent hazards involved in such activities as fire control, technical cliff rescue, aquatic rescue, accident investigation, emergency driving and the use of law enforcement defensive equipment in possible life-threatening situations.
